Ian Davenport: Circle | Line | Colour
Ian Davenport (*1966) is one of the most important representatives of British abstract painting. He became internationally known for his “puddle paintings”, in which he lets colored paint run in controlled paths over large picture supports, creating a fascinating balance of chance and precision. But Davenport's work goes far beyond this characteristic technique: he also repeatedly explores the shape of the circle - a universal symbol of harmony, infinity and rhythm.
The exhibition Circle, Line, Colour provides an insight into Davenport's diverse prints, including etchings and screen prints, which impressively document his intensive exploration of color and structure. With a keen sense of composition, Davenport uses the possibilities of printmaking to create complex layers of color and linear patterns. The show is complemented by selected originals that establish a direct link to his painterly work.
The exhibition invites visitors to rediscover Davenport's subtle variations of line and surface - and to experience how consistently and playfully the artist constantly reinterprets the basic elements of art.
